Society for the Advancement of Floral Design

What is SAFD?

The Society for Advancement of Floral Design, SAFD, is an educational, non-profit organization founded over ten years ago for the women of Northwest Houston.  SAFD promotes the study and enjoyment of flower design through volunteerism, educational programs, and community involvement.  Members include Texas Master Florists, floral shop owners and staff, novice designers, and floral enthusiasts.

What does SAFD do?

The real purpose of SAFD is to promote the enjoyment and study of floral design.
SAFD has four main functions:  Continuing Education, Community  Service, Networking, and Fellowship

Membership

SAFD membership is open to all.  SAFD is composed of members that are professional florists and floral designers and others who are beginners and hobbyists who want to learn about floral design.  The group then uses their combined knowledge and skills for charity work.  The only requirements for membership are a love of flowers and a desire to learn.

The membership fee is $45 annually ($30, if over 65).  Contact Membership Chair Phyllis Smith at 281-370-9965 psmith16@sbcglobal.net to receive an application for membership.

Meetings

SAFD meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month, September through May, at the Cypress Creek Christian Community Center at 6823 Cypresswood Drive, Spring, TX 77379.  Each meeting begins with networking and snacking at 6:30 PM.  Monthly meetings are free to SAFD members and $5.00 for non-members.  Reservations are appreciated, but not required.  Members volunteer to bring snacks to be enjoyed during the meeting.  Occasionally a fee is charged and reservations are required when hands-on classes are provided during the meeting.

SAFD's main fundraiser is the annual Tabletop Dinner. Each year SAFD members and guest designers continue to inspire all with their unique presentations. Tables are decorated in every imaginable theme by both professional floral designers and beginning floral designers.  The theme is up to the designer, and the imaginations run wild with creativity. 2006 Tabletop  2008 Tabletop

Continuing Education

In addition to monthly meetings, SAFD offers several hands-on workshops each year.  Topics included: Thanksgiving centerpiece, Christmas mantelpiece, and spiral hand-tied bouquets.

SAFD also provides an annual $300 scholarship to assist members in their quest for additional edbucation in floral design. The 2005-2006 scholarship recipient was Elaine O'Connor, SAFD Vice-Chairman 2005-2006, and SAFD Chairman 2006-2007. The 2006-2007 Scholarship was awarded to Elaine Carrell TMF. Congratulations!

Community Service

Each month SAFD makes floral arrangements to share with patients being treated in hospice care.  40+ silk arrangements are made each month at the hospice workshop.  These arrangements are given to a local hospice health care provider who distributes them to both the home-bound patients, as well as those in a hospice nursing facility.  At Valentine's Day, SAFD makes 125 fresh carnation bud vases to be delivered to a local nursing home for the residents.  In the 2005-2006 year, Atria Healthcare, Lawrence Street Nursing Home, and Lighthouse Hospice were recipients of SAFD's floral designs.

SAFD is also available to other non-profit organizations in need of floral arrangements. At a typical project, centerpieces are made for 35-60 tables, depending on the event size.  The centerpieces range from standard long-and-low arrangements to high style designs.  During the 2005-2006 year, SAFD made 45 Valentine centerpieces for the Willowbrook Rotary Club's annual fundraising gala and 30 high-style designs for Zonta International's annual event.  All this work is done without pay by volunteers with all skill levels and a desire to bring cheer to others.
