Local
businesses honor 10 mothers
by Kathy Parks
This year
marks the 100th anniversary of the Mother’s Day and several local
businesses came together in a contest that showered 10 mothers with
Mother’s Day gifts from each. Beginning in March, friends and family
members nominated their favorite mother by dropping their name and
contact information in a bowl at Flowers of
Kingwood, On the Park Candy
Story, Jeweler’s Bench, Best Wishes Gifts, Cypress Wood Gracious Living
and The Tribune.
Names of the lucky mothers
were drawn on April 30 and they gathered on May 6 to receive their
prizes and certificates. Winners were mothers living in Kingwood,
Huffman and Humble. The lucky ladies are: Yvonne Callicott, Julie
Steptoe, Sheryll Richards, Dr. Elaine Scott, Adele Marshall, Sheri
Staggs, Nicole Watkins, Nelda Light and Julie Lindenmath.
Some of
the mothers chosen had their names dropped in each sponsor’s bowl;
others entered only once. The sponsors said that the contest generated
a lot of interest. More than 298 entries were received.
The local
contest tied in to a larger national competition. Participants who
logged onto the Flowers
of
Kingwood web site could enter a connected
Teleflora contest and were eligible to take home $25,000 and appear on
the “Today Show.” The local winners were presented the same 100th
anniversary commemorative Teleflora vase presented to the national
winner on the NBC Mother’s Day television special, which aired on
Sunday.
