Feng Shui is an ancient art and science developed over 3,000 years ago in China. It is a complex body of knowledge that reveals the ways to balance the energies of the environment to assure health, wealth and good fortune for people inhabiting it. "Feng" means "wind" and "shui" means "water" (pronounced fung-shway). In Chinese culture gentle wind and clear water have always been associated with good harvest and good health, thus "good feng shui" came to mean good livelihood and fortune, while "bad feng shui" came to mean hardship and misfortune.

Feng Shui is the practice of placing objects in specific areas of your environment (home or office) which will allow the avenues of Chi (life energy) to flow harmoniously.

A healthy home requires a significant supply of "life energy." Green house plants are one of the easiest ways to incorporate a living force into your space. Fresh cut flowers are also a good choice as long as you discard them promptly when they begin showing signs of wilting. Dry flowers are considered a no-no in Feng Shui design because the life force that was once thriving in them has gone.

Color is one of the easiest ways to bring vibrant, positive energy into your environment.  When surrounded by fresh, beautiful colors, not only your mood, but also your outlook on life changes. In feng shui, the use of color is based on the theory of five elements:  Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal.  By applying it right, you will bring more harmony, balance and positive energy into your space.
  • WOOD: Green, Brown
  • FIRE: Red, Strong Yellow, Orange, Purple
  • EARTH: Light Yellow, Sandy/Earthy, Light Brown
  • METAL: White, Gray
  • WATER: Blue, Black

Feng Shui, Flowers, and Chi

Living flowers and plants play a big part in harnessing or altering this beneficial energy, or chi. The Flowers & Plants Association has the following suggestions to improve your surroundings with flowers and plants by these methods.

A white vase with red or pink fresh flowers on the bedside table will bring more romance into your life.

Jasmine is the plant of friendship and a good gift to take when visiting.

Peonies strengthen male energy - one species is known as Male Vermilion. They are emblems of loyalty and affection; and can strengthen the heart and prevent blood disorders and congestion. Peonies with plenty of flowers and leaves are an omen of good fortune.

Chrysanthemums bring laughter and happiness to your home. The Chinese have beautiful names for them such as Heaven full of Stars or Drunk with Wine made from the Peaches of the Immortals. Chrysanthemums are associated with a life of relaxation and retirement.

The Narcissus is known as the Water Fairy. Grown from bulbs and forced into bloom exactly at the new year, it brings good luck for the next twelve months.

Lilies, considered one of the eight treasures, are regarded as an emblem of summer and abundance, and are very favorable flowers to have in the home.

You should have at least one big plant in each room to freshen the atmosphere, clean the air, and bring beneficial energy.

Green is the color of growth. Green plants reflect peace and harmony and will ease troubled minds. They alleviate all stress, and represent balance, harmony and peace.

Spiky plants can bring bad energy, but they can also reactivate areas of sluggish energy in the home, thus moving chi around.

Round-leafed plants encourage good energy and bring good fortune. Jade plants or money trees are particularly auspicious.

FENG SHUI - Living Plants
by Julie Holycross

Healthy plants and flowers are a great way to achieve positive flow of Chi. They can be used with great success in any area of the home. Flowers are great to use to correlate with the colors of the bagua. Just placing them in an area with the colors that go in that area of the home can enliven that area. When choosing plants, make sure that they have wide, rounded leaves. An example of this kind of plant is the Jade plant. Ficus plants are also good because they have a soft and graceful look to them. Plants to avoid are the pointy leaves, spider plants are this way. These plants kind of prick your finger when touching them so you'll be able to recognize these types of plants. Cactus plants also fall into this category, but they are allowed in the fire area of your home, or by an office computer to help with the electromagnetic stress from your computer. Silk and plastic plants and flowers can be used too. Especially if you do not have a green thumb and can't seem to keep plants healthy and alive. In that case, artificial plants are best to use. It is better to have a nice looking artificial plant than an unhealthy plant which depletes the Chi in that area.

Plants and flowers are of the wood element. This is a great way to balance an area that is saturated with too much earth. The earth's element also resembles square and rectangle homes along with any other object that is square and rectangle. So adding plants and flowers helps this area too.

Of pink carnations, flowers and good energy

By S. B. S.Surendran

Feng Shui is an ancient Oriental method of dividing good and bad forces, which is gaining popularity worldwide.
Flowers are very special Feng Shui enhancers. It could be a simple floral decoration in our home, office or a nice bouquet for someone special. It could all be enhanced with the right colours and combination of flowers.

In Feng Shui, living flowers and plants play a big role in harnessing or altering this beneficial energy, or chi.

Flowers have meanings and are silent communicators of our feelings. We are aware that roses symbolize love and desire, but flowers like carnations especially the pink carnations are excellent Feng Shui. Carnations represent admiration in general whereas pink carnations represent admiration, regard, Peace, love and sincerity. A white vase with red or pink fresh flowers on the bedside table will bring more romance into your life. If you wish to communicate to someone whom you admire, respect and care a floral bouquet of pink and white carnation not only communicates this but even patches up whatever irritants or obstacles existed in a relationship. Pink is not only for admiration but brings in true love and enhances the relationship luck. In Feng Shui pink represents the earth energy and also signifies the Southwest sector which relates to marriage, love and relationships. If you are unable to place flowers in a bedroom displaying colours of pink in the form of décor, furnishings or wall colors would be more appropriate.

Red is the color for passion so anthoriums are excellent but if you wish to communicate your feelings of appreciation and respect anthoriums with pink carnations is the right combinations as this also bring good luck in your relationships. Yellow flowers represent the energy of friendship and connectedness so chrysanthemums, dahlias and lilies are the right choice.

Purple brings spiritual energy and serenity so orchids are wonderful. Sunflowers symbolize devotion, lily is a compliment of one's beauty and the iris shows admiration of one's wisdom.

Flowers hold a special significance at Chinese New Year.

Three of the most commonly purchased flowers are blossoms, kumquat tree and peony flowers. Blossoms symbolize life, growth and prosperity. Peach blossoms are the most auspicious because in Chinese culture the peach is a symbol of long life and is regarded as the strongest defence against evil.

The kumquat tree symbolizes gold, wealth, unity and perfection. The peony is called the "flower of riches and honour" in Chinese. It is the symbol of love and affection, as well as being a symbol for feminine beauty. The bright red peony is particularly auspicious, bringing with it luck and good fortune.

Fresh cut flowers attract a lot of positive romance energy. But as they wilt they should be discarded. To prolong the life of your flowers, change the water often, keep them away from the television set and other electrical devices because these tend to dry out flowers prematurely also shield them from direct sunlight and drafts. Live plants that flower also bring lots of good romance energy to the bedroom. They also give off life-sustaining oxygen to help you rest and recuperate.

Placing fresh flowers in the living rooms with a combination of the appropriate colours and purifying the air with the right fragrance or incense ushers in the right Feng Shui for enhancing the marriage luck.

Feng Shui, Plants and Salt

Feng Shui expert, Pinky Kapoor makes the following recommendations:

Place fresh green plants along with a glass bowl filled with salt on the window sills of the toilet to absorb the negative Chi of this area. Change the salt every week.

Pointed, sharp or spiky-leaved cacti in interiors kills the heavenly Chi.

Bonsais are not recommended in Feng Shui either, as the Chinese believe stunting the natural growth of plants is to go against nature.

Having plants in the bedrooms at night is not advised at all because they fill the rooms with carbon dioxide.

Wood in the form of plants is the only living element among the five elements of nature. Placing them in our surroundings like the entrance, corridors, hallways, living rooms and balconies helps us to grow with them.

Plants and flowers occupy an important position in Feng shui. They can be placed on either side of the entrance door to serve dual purposes. Firstly, they will make the entrance look beautiful and draw positive Chi in abundance into your home. Secondly, they will absorb the negative energy left behind by your visitors.

Small earthen pots filled with salt till the brim and hidden in plants will also help absorb the negativity to a great extent. The salt has to be changed every day since it will stagnate after absorbing negative energy.

Placing a fresh green plant between the water sink and cooking stove helps to harmonise the conflicting elements. Water starts nourishing the plant, which in turn fuels the fire, according to the productive cycle of the five elements. Since kitchens have a lot of metallic utensils, care must be taken to ensure that it is balanced with greenery in the form of plants and flowers to promote a healthy environment.

Put fresh, beautiful and fragrant flowers, preferably the ones that are related to the five elements, in a bowl of water. The corresponding colours are yellow for earth, white for metal, blue for water, green for wood and deep red for fire. The presence of the colours of all these elements provides a perfect balance of Chi. Take one of these soaked flowers and sprinkle its water in the entire house by moving around in a clockwise manner. In the end sprinkle it on yourself and all the family members.

To clear bedrooms of any kind of negativity and to have a good night’s sleep, light an aromatherapy candle placed on a plate with flowers in water in the east of the north-east corner.

Fresh flowers invite positive Chi into our homes and create an aroma of their own in the surroundings. Feng Shui does not recommend artificial flowers that had life once and were later dried and dyed in different colours. These are taken as dead flowers that emit negative and stagnant energy. However, decorative flowers made of silk, glass or any material other than plastic can be used in home decor.

Fire element relates to red, maroon, pink, purple, violet, mauve and peach colours. Cool blue colours represent the water element. Glowing rich metallic-coloured flowers are connected with the metal element.

Flowers in tones of earthy hues like rust, cream, yellow and off-white are excellent for stabilising the earth energy of the south-west corner. Flowers of all colours of nature are connected with the wood element. Assorted-coloured flowers when arranged ensure a perfect balance of Chi.
