A new study suggests that flowers have a calming effect on children, specifically with their temper tantrums.

An English study, conducted at the University of Plymouth, finds that kids with moderate to severe tantrums had 42 percent fewer tantrums after being given Bach Flower essence (a remedy made from the essences of different plants and flowers) in pill form, reports a university press release. Seventy-three percent of children with moderate to severe tantrums experienced some overall benefit.

"We have been researching the benefits of these remedies for a number of years now and ... these findings suggest that they are ... of benefit young children in tackling what can be a very distressing and extremely stressful situation," says the study's leader, Prof. Michael Hyland of University of Plymouth.

The study, which monitored 38 children, ages two- to five, also found that even during a tantrum, there was "30 percent less screaming, 24 percent less whining, 35 percent less kicking and hitting, 21 percent less crying, and breath holding fell by 14 percent," according to the press release.

"The response to flower essences seem to be due to several mechanisms that are working in parallel," Hyland said in the release. "It isn't only a placebo ... It also seems to be the case that if flower essences 'feel right,' they are more likely to produce benefit."
