Flowers and plants are delivered to businesses all over the country for many reasons:
  • Most people work and are not home to receive deliveries.
  • Co-workers reinforce the idea that receiving flowers is special.
  • Many companies send flowers and plants to foster relationships.
  • Flowers and plants enhance the decor of office environments.
  • Flowers and plants make people happy an increase productivity.

Should flowers be sent to a person's place of employment?
Absolutely.  Not only will they think you are wonderful for sending them flowers, but  co-workers will tell her how wonderful you are and how lucky she is.

How can a company foster relationships with flowers and plants?

Professional Secretaries Week is a perfect example of a company fostering a relationship with it's employees.  Flowers and plants tell an employee they are appreciated.  Employees who feel appreciated are more loyal and work harder to pursue company goals.  Many companies send flowers and plants to recognize employee birthdays and to celebrate special achievements.

Flowers and plants are also sent to foster a company's relationship with other companies.  Here are a few examples:

  • Introduction - request for business
  • Grand opening or relocation of a business
  • Congratulations for special achievement
  • Thank you for a referral
  • Loss of a loved one or key employee
Businesses also use flowers and plants to enhance their office decor.  Some business environments are cold and sterile.  The addition of floral arrangements and plants can create a more comfortable environment.  Flowers and plants in the reception area of a business give a feeling of welcome.

Can flowers and plants make workers more productive and creative?

In the floral industry, we understand that the presence of floral products can energize any workplace. But can they give businesses the competitive edge in the modern economy?

In 2003, the Society of American Florists with Texas A&M University to learn how flowers and plants in the workplace impact productivity and problem solving.

The study shows the following:
  • Problem-solving skills, idea generation and creative performance improve substantially in workplace environments that include flowers and plants.

  • Specifically, both men and women who work in environments with flowers and plants demonstrate more innovative thinking as compared to environments with sculpture or no decorative objects.

  • Men who participated in the study generated 30% more ideas when working in environments with flowers and plants than ones without.

  • While men generate a greater abundance of ideas, the research shows that women generate more creative, flexible solutions to problems in workplace environments with flowers and plants.

As a result, flowers and plants prove to be natural additions to any work environment.

"The research shows that flowers and plants can be
important in the most meaningful way to businesses
in the modern economy. Productivity, in the form
of innovation and creative problem solving,
can mean the difference between mild and great success."

"Flowers and plants are not simply visual embellishments.
They can contribute to better feelings in employees
and a more productive work environment."

Roger Ulrich, Ph.D.
Behavioral scientist and the study's lead researcher.
Texas A&M University
