First a little about myself.  My name is Alex Torres AIFD TMF. I am a Texas Master Florist and freelance designer in Houston, Texas.  I have been actively involved in the floral industry for almost 20 years.  I am a member of the Allied Florists of Houston, American Institute of Floral Designers, and the Texas State Florists Association.

I am also a competitive floral designer  and speaker.  I won the Allied Florists of Houston's Houston Cup in 2001, the Texas State Florists Association's Texas Cup in 2005 and the Society of American Florists' Sylvia Cup in 2005.

My mission is to inspire all floral designers whether you have been in the floral industry two weeks or twenty years.  I believe that we should never stop learning because we can all learn so much from each other.  Some of the topics and ideas I will be covering will be old hat to some, but may provide a wealth of information and inspiration for others.  I will also welcome questions and ideas for future columns.  This is a design forum. So I will be bouncing between actual floral designs and the steps involved in creating them.  I will also try to provide detailed instructions on constructing the pieces that we will be featuring.

It is my hope that these tips are useful.  Please feel free to e-mail me and tell me what your thoughts are on this column.  Suggestions, ideas, compliments, hate mail...all types of feedback will be appreciated.

Please direct them to alextorrestmf@aol.com.

Special Thanks to Sheri White AAF TMFA, Renee Carpenter TMFA, Mary Lou Nix and Nora Cisneros TMFA for their help in making this column a reality.  Your commitment to furthering knowledge inspires me.
