"The 2002 Floral Flag"



The 2002 Floral Flag was planted in Lompoc, CA by the Bodger Seed Company.
Planted as a tribute after the September 11, 2001 tragedy.

The 2002 floral flag was 740 feet wide and 390 feet high and maintained the proper flag dimensions as described in executive order #10834.
This flag was 6.65 acres and was the first floral flag to be planted with 5 pointed stars, each star was 24 feet in diameter and each stripe 30 feet wide. This flag was estimated to contain more than 400,000 Larkspur plants with 4-5 flower stems each for a total of more than 2 million flowers.
It's life span was approximately 3 months and went to seed in early August 2002.

Bodger Seed Company's first floral flag was planted a week after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, 1941 and was in bloom during the early summer of 1942.

The University of Virginia Tech ~ rare viewing of a "corpse flower" in bloom.

The Corpse Flower (Amorphophallus titanum) blooms only once every few years, and produces a stench which can be smelled over a hundred yards away. According to the Associated Press, the plant emits a stench to attract decaying flesh-eating beetles, flies and sweat bees for pollination. Once it blooms, the odor lingers for about eight hours, then it takes several more years before the plant has enough energy to bloom again. Virginia Tech has the only two blooming corpse plants in Virginia after they were donated by James Symon of Sumatra in 1993. SOURCE:  www.wayodd.com
