Gentlemen:

Please allow me to introduce you to a campaign started by Allied Florists of Houston and directed to the funeral director industry nationally. It's entitled, "It All Begins With You", and it is intended to make the funeral industry aware of the impact that the four words "In Lieu of Flowers" has on the floral industry. As the first persons the bereaved family encounters, we hope that you will think a moment before advising the family on how to word their obituary. These four words have a very confusing meaning to those reading the obituaries, and a very definite and negative impact on our business.

Instead, we suggest that you simply omit the words altogether when crafting the obituary. One possible wording could be, "In memory of (deceased), [omit In Lieu of Flowers] the family requests that a donation be made to (charity)." Notice the much more positive wording of this sentence. It does not suggest that the reader might not have sufficient resources to remember the deceased with flowers and a donation, and the decision how to remember the deceased is instead left with the reader. There is no confusion on the part of the reader if it is proper to send flowers despite the family's request, yet the request for a donation is still very prominent.

The floral industry views itself as an enhancement to the services you provide, all for the benefit of the family of the deceased. Just think how the family will remember services that have no flowers whatsoever. Will they recommend your funeral home when the next family member passes? We look to make your services as memorable as you do yourselves.

Please keep these thoughts in mind the next time you are asked to help with the wording of the obituary.

Sincerely,

Together, we can make a difference ...
It All Begins With You
